The CSG West family is deeply saddened of the passing of former CSG West Chair Sam Hunt, who served as a Washington State legislator for nearly a quarter century. Senator Hunt passed away last Saturday, and his loss is felt not only in Washington but across the country. A true CSG statesman throughout his legislative career, Senator Hunt spent 24 years in the Washington State Legislature — 16 years in the state House before moving to the Senate in 2017, where he served until his retirement in 2025. He served as CSG West Chair in 2017 and went on to chair CSG National in 2022, reflecting the deep respect his colleagues held for his leadership.
“Sam was a dedicated public servant who believed deeply in the responsibility of governing and the importance of bringing people together to serve the public good. He often described the privilege of elected office as being ‘inside the door rather than outside’ — the unique honor of casting a vote rather than seeking to influence one. Throughout his career, he earned the respect of colleagues across party lines through his steady leadership, thoughtful approach and commitment to strengthening state government.”
– California Assemblymember Mike Gipson, 2026 CSG National Chair and 2023 CSG West Chair

CSG West Director Edgar Ruiz remembers Senator Hunt as one of the kindest individuals he had the privilege of knowing — a man with a wonderful sense of humor and an unwavering dedication to public service. Those who worked alongside him spoke of his warmth and his genuine commitment to civility and decorum in public life
Our team had the pleasure of working closely with Senator Hunt during his chairmanship of CSG West, including the planning of that year’s Annual Meeting in Tacoma. He will be deeply missed.
